Girl Scout Bridging Cupcakes

Looking for a fun snack for your Girl Scout bridging ceremony?  These cupcakes were super fun and easy.

About 2 years, my co-leaders and I went all out and made the Bridging Cakes (already listed).  Last year, we wanted to do something different and someone gave us the idea of cupcakes.   It didn’t take as long but turned out super cute and the girls loved them.

Instructions

  • First, make cupcakes (box is fine)
  • Add blue and chocolate icing in a different icing bags or ziplock bags with a corner removed
  • Add the icing, using 1/2 blue for daisies and 1/2 brown for brownies
  • add 2 mini marshmallows to each side of the bridge for clouds
  • add 1/2 of one piece of Airhead extreme for the rainbow bridge.

The result- Super cute little bridging cupcakes.  For the other two (Brownie to Junior & Junior to Cadette), use the same instructions, just vary the icing colors.  Enjoy!

Lego Rainy Day Fun -Mr. & Mrs. Pac- Man

Lego, Pac-Man, Mrs. Pac-Man, old school, arcade
His version of Mr. & Mrs. Pac-Man
Looking for a rainy day Lego build?  Or a sunny day Lego build for that matter!  – This fun project was a fun way of spending some time with my 10 year old in his favorite hobby.

Time for some old school fun!  Mr. & Mrs. Pac Man is built completely out of Legos.

To make these, we used only bricks, nothing special.  Mainly yellow of course, but also some red, blue, and black to make Mrs. Pac-Man stand out.  The blue and black bricks were 1 x 1 and the rest were built from a variety of combinations.

I’m looking forward to what my son wants to build next. I’m hoping it might be some ghosts or pellets to go along with this theme. I had forgotten how much fun it was just to sit and build with Legos. Though, honestly, I was mainly his assistant in finding the pieces.  🙂

Enjoy!

Girl Scout Bridging Cakes

girl scout, bridging ceremony, cakes
This was our version of each level’s uniform represented on a cake.

During one of our bridging ceremonies, we decided to make cakes to represent each level.  It was a lot of work, but a lot of fun creating the cakes.  The girls loved them!

Items Needed

  • cake mix to make 4 cakes
  • blue, brown, green,white icing
  • food coloring
  • fondant & piping bags
  • mini marshmallows
  • rainbow airheads
  • different colors of sprinkles

We started out by making 4 cakes and iced them different colors.  To make the khaki color, we mixed some of the chocolate into the white icing.  Next we used fondant into piping bags and decorated the cakes.  We used pictures from the Girl Scout books to attempt to make some badges on each one.  We also added sprinkles in parts like the flag and daisy petals.

To make the badges look 3-D, we used frosting underneath each badge to make it a little higher than the rest of the cake before decorating it with fondant.

Finally, we connected each of the cakes together using the mini marshmallows and rainbow colored airheads.  The result is above.  This was our first attempt, so we were quite proud that they turned out. If you do something similar, we would love to see it.

Scout Banana Boats Camping Foil Pack

Looking for an easy treat to make while camping?   An ooey, gooey, easy treat?  Then Banana Boats may be the way to go.

banana boat, foil pack, camping, Girl Scouts
My daughter likes hers lightly melted

Ingredients

  •        1 banana per person (may cut in ½ if smaller portion is required)
  •        Mini marshmallows
  •        Chocolate, butterscotch, or other chips

Equipment

  •        Sharp Knife
  •        Aluminum Foil (Reynolds’s Heavy Duty)
  •        Potholder

Directions

Two different ways to do this-  One is to cut a wedge out of the top and use it as a cover for your boat. (Works great when you have a ½ piece of banana)

banana boat, sliced banana
The full banana cut with a slit down the middle.

2nd way is to use whole banana and make a slit  from top to bottom.

Whichever way you choose- the next step is to pack the banana with marshmallows and chocolate chips

Finally, Wrap banana drug store style and cook over coals long enough to melt chips.

You can use all kinds of variations to this simple recipe.   I use Enjoy Life chocolate chips due to my son’s food allergies.  However, you are only limited to your imagination.  Enjoy!

Lego Mario Question Block

question block, Mario, Lego
Mario’s question block made with Legos.

My son is constantly making things out of Legos.

Today, he made a coin block from Mario.  He counted the pixels and corresponded them  to the correct number of bricks.

This particular piece is made using only yellow, white and black bricks. Using 2 x 6 bricks on the bottom and building up using different sizes of bricks.

Special thanks to the picture that inspired him to build it..

Cinnamon Honey Butter Gift

Looking for a fun and easy Holiday gift or something to give a teacher, hostess or co-worker.

This super easy recipe was fun and my kids even helped.

Easy Christmas gift of Cinnamon Honey Butter for friends & family.

I started by using a recipe from allrecipes.com.

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup confectioner’s sugar
  • ½ cup butter
  • ½ cup honey
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

Blend everything together until whipped (about 3-5 min) Tastes amazing but if it is too sweet, you can make some using pumpkin pie spice.  YUM!

Makes about ½ pint.

Gift Ready

  • To make it gift ready, my daughter traced outlines of the top on the back of wrapping paper – then cut it out and glued it on the top of the jar using hot glue.

Lid – after hot gluing the wrapping paper to the top

-To make the top of the jar complete, we used hot glue and some ribbon to wrap the top of the jar.

-After pouring the butter into the jar, using a spatula, we added the top of the jar, a tag that said Cinnamon Honey Butter and it was complete.
We made several of these batches using to give to friends and family.  So far they have been a big hit!  Next year, we are going to try to make these in our older Girl Scout troop.  Should be great!!

DIY Lego Christmas Tree

  • My son and I were trying to come up with some Christmas decorations Lego style.  He decided that his Lego people needed a Christmas tree.  🙂  The result….

DIY Lego Christmas Tree
  • We used brown bricks for the base of the tree and green bricks for the tree itself, making it move into a triangle shape.  At the end, we topped it off with a yellow brick for the star.
  • To add a little more festive feel, we had some stickers from Hobby Lobby left over from Girl Scouts.  We added some red glitter stickers for garland, and some glitter dots for ornaments.

-No tree is complete without presents, so we added some.  To make the presents, we used 2×2 bricks and a small round piece for the bow.  The tall present was just made from a different type of brick.  You could make any type of present from any size Lego bricks.

Have fun!   We would love to see some of your tree creations and present designs.

Multiplying by 1 Digit- Algorithm Method

-In 5th grade, the Common Core math standard is multiplication by the standard algorithm.

-Some of my students came to me knowing how to do it from their parents or from 4th grade, but most were lost.  In order to combat that problem, I started by problem solving with them repeated addition problems.  I made them long so they could begin to see why we needed something easier and faster.

Once that was established, we made a quick how to guide – and called it the quick start guide. This way if they got lost on any of their steps, they could turn back in their notebook to that page to assist them.

Quick Start Guide to Multiplication by 1 Digit for 5th Graders

After a couple of days of practicing in whole group, then small groups and then on their own, I gave them an exit slip to see who could do the algorithm and who couldn’t.  For the students who were still having problems, I pulled them aside in small group reteach to work on the skills they were struggling in.

For the other kids, I introduced them to different types of word problems and manipulatives like Versatiles in which the students could continue working on the skills, just at a level above the other students.  Enriching them so they wouldn’t get bored. They loved the manipulatives and called them fun with toys.

By the end of the week, I had 94% of my students who could compete the algorithm completely on their own.  I felt that overall it was a good week.

DIY Camping Paper Towel Holder

Tired of your paper towels rolling around while camping?  Tired of picking them up off the ground or running to catch them when the wind blows?  Left your nice store bought holder at home?

Paper Towel Holder
Girl Scout DIY paper towel holder for camping.

Our Girl Scouts decided that a quick solution uses only string and a stick. They were tired of the above problems and dirty towels, so they found a solution.  They used a long stick, slid the paper towels on the rod and used string to tie up the ends to the top of the kitchen tent.  Now no more running after the towels.  They were super proud of themselves for coming up with such an easy solution!
